PARENT HANDBOOK HIGHLIGHTS

ATTENDANCE REGULATIONS

If the child is to perform at his/her optimum level, regular attendance at school is important.   Absences are classified as "EXCUSED", or "UNLAWFUL".  Illness, religious holidays, quarantine, death in the immediate family, impassable roads and exceptionally urgent reasons tat directly affect the child are the only reasons for excusable absence from school.

Following unlawful absences, parents/guardians may receive notification from school officials of penalties for violation of the Compulsory Attendance Laws (Sec. 1333).

If your child is to absent or tardy, you must call the school safety number to report the absence or tardy arrival.  You may call at any time and leave a voice-mail message.  Please call the designated number at your child’s school each day your child will be absent.  This procedure insures that all students, whether present or absent, are accounted for.

Upon return to school after an absence, please have you child bring a note stating the child’s name, teacher’s name, day or days absent, the reason for absence, and a parent/guardian signature.  For absences of three days or longer, a doctor’s note is required also.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

*Birthdays: Birthdays are a special day in your child’s life and we are able to celebrate them with minimal disruption during the school day. Your child may bring in a snack to share with the class. In accordance with the District’s new Wellness Policy please consider sending a healthier snack such as fruit, vegetables, or a snack that contains minimal added sugar. Please do not send anything that needs to be refrigerated or frozen. Your child may bring their snack in with them in the morning or you may leave it in the office. It is also encouraged to consider non-food items (stickers, etc.) as an alternative to a snack.

LOST AND FOUND ARTICLES

Please check the "Lost and Found" periodically for any lost items.  Found articles will be displayed periodically so that children may make claims.

Helpful hint: All personal articles belonging to your child should be marked or labeled on the inside with the child’s name.  This includes book bags, wallets, lunch boxes, and articles of clothing such as sweaters, jackets, hats, etc.

STUDENT INFORMATION CHANGES

Parents/guardians are responsible for reporting to the school office any change of address, telephone number or other pertinent information which may occur during the school year.  As soon as such a change occurs, the school should be notified. We must have current information in order to notify you should an emergency occur.

HEALTH PROCEDURES

Please send all required health forms to those schools so up to date information about your child is accessible at times.  Should anything change during the school year, it is essential that information be forwarded to the school office immediately.

ROOM PARENTS

All classrooms will be appointed room parents to assist with certain activities by the school parent group. The parent group will inform each teacher of room parent assignments.

Homeroom parents should report to the school office each time that they entered the school building.

Teachers should confer with their room parents prior to all planned activities to clarify the room parents rolled during a given activity.

Activities that may need assistance from room parents are:

1. Halloween activities
2. Winter break activities
3. Field trips
4. Other classrooms sponsored activities and events

Typical duties of room parents:

    1. Organize refreshments for activities by contacting other parents in the class, (cups, napkins, refreshments, etc.)
    2. See the supplies arrive on time the day of the activities
    3. Assist at activities and events
    4. Be contact person for other parents who may be needed for various activities
    5. Help supervise students, under direction of the teacher, on field trips
    6. In an emergency, such as an early school closing, room parents may be notified to make parent calls.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL NIGHT

In the fall, a back-to-school night is scheduled.  This is a pleasant way to become acquainted with the school.  Topics of educational interest will be presented and discussed as well as the goals of a particular year.  Individual school dates are listed in the school calendar.

VISITING THE SCHOOL

Parents/guardians are welcome to observe classrooms and other school areas and activities by contacting the principal at least twenty-four hours in advance to schedule the visit.  It should be understood that visitors may not take any time from the teachers and students while classes are in session.
